While firefighter Simon Trye was in lockdown, he got lost in the void of YouTube videos, which inspired him to try set a Guinness World Record.
He stumbled across a video of an American firefighter who tried – and failed – to set a Guinness World Record for the fastest half marathon wearing full firefighter kit and breathing apparatus.
After a few trial runs at work Simon decided to pursue the world record himself, and added an extra challenge of raising $3,000 for KidsCan.
Eight months of grueling training later Simon crossed the finish line of the Kerikeri Half Marathon event in 3hr 21min 41sec and officially became a Guinness World Record holder. He also smashed his fundraising target, raising an incredible $16,213 for KidsCan!

The Kilometres for KidsCan fundraiser is an event held by schools across New Zealand. They hold a fun run and their students raise money for KidsCan, to help other kids in need.
In 2019, Deanwell School year 4 student Himaani Vrinda Devi was New Zealand's top individual fundraiser for Kilometres for KidsCan, raising an incredible $5,500!
Himaani made a campaign video with her Dad, and asked all her family and friends for donations. Deanwell School is supported by KidsCan, so Himaani had seen first-hand the difference KidsCan makes.
In an emotional speech after her run, Himaani said: “At my school I learn Mahi Ngatahi – working together, helping and caring for each other. I am a Kiwi kid. I want to help KidsCan support all needy Kiwi kids to get an equal chance at at good education."
Since 2016, Seed Gallery has been donating a portion of sales from their annual Christmas exhibition to KidsCan. For their 2020 exhibition, artists created original artworks from 300 custom cut plywood shapes.
Seed Gallery generously donated $10 from the sale of each of these original artworks to KidsCan. The exhibition raised over $3,500 to help give all Kiwi kids a fair start.
The team says KidsCan was their first choice of charity to support: “As parents, it hurts our hearts to see the hardships so many Kiwi kids face on a daily basis. We are so grateful for what KidsCan does and that we can help them in some small way.”

For $30 a month, you can support a Kiwi kid and give them the essentials they need to learn.
Every donation KidsCan receives helps more Kiwi kids reach their potential.
